The Metro hygiene program gives access to hundreds of unhoused people access to showers and full hygiene products including razors, soap, shampoo, oral hygiene products, feminine hygiene products, etc. We have many volunteers who do
laundry while our members are in the shower. Our members are also given new bras and underwear and any clothes that are needed. We are presently running 500 showers a month and 270 loads of laundry.
At the hygiene program our members can also access our ID service, lockers, hair cuts, case work with the ministry, computers, mail service, and wound care. With the Rotary grant, we have been able to build a new wound care station, and purchase industrial laundry equipment. As a result, we would be able to double this service provision!
Dr. Silvina Mema, the deputy health officer, has indicated that our hygiene program is a critical necessity for the health of our unhoused community, and this grant will impact many more people and increase their health outcomes and well being.
Since we opened the hygiene program more than two years ago, we have welcomed more than 1300 unhoused members who have accessed this critical service!
